Department Manager

An opportunity exists to fill the position of Departmental Manager within our Nursing Department assigned to the Intensive Care Unit, Operating Theatre, and Day Surgery Unit. Suitably qualified internal candidates are invited to express interest by the deadline date listed below.

A.    OBJECTIVE AND RELATIONSHIP

  • To manage the clinical department under his or her supervision and ensure that the values and goals of the Nursing Department are upheld through effective leadership, support, and training.
  • Liaises with other clinical Heads and other health practitioners in relation to patient care.

B.     MAIN DUTIES AND TASKS

  • Manages the assigned clinical department through the implementation of strategic objectives, developing annual work programmes, establishing SMART targets and directing the allocation of resources to enable the achievement of performance objectives and efficiency in operations.
  • Leads and manages the staff of the assigned clinical department through target setting, monitoring and appraisal of individual staff performance, coaching, mentoring and motivating staff to drive productivity and enable the efficient operations of the department.
  • Provides technical advice and guidance to Ward Managers and staff on policies and practices, through dialogue and consultation to enable decision making which is in accordance with the legislation, principles and guidelines in relation to nursing practice.
  • Utilizes resources allocated to the assigned clinical Department in an effective manner, and provides relevant support and training in nursing practices and service delivery to ensure that quality standards are consistently maintained and quality assurance practices are consistently monitored;
  • Introduces programmes and facilitates the development of processes that contribute to achieving continuous quality improvement in patient care within the department assigned;
  • Effectively engages and deploys human resources assigned to the Department;
  • Ensures effective multidisciplinary and primary care team engagement to ensure customer needs are achieved in a timely manner.
  • Provides effective co-ordination of functions through visible on the floor support of staff and monitoring of operational activities within the various departments;
  • Ensures adherence to safety standards within the assigned department to ensure the health, safety and security of patients, and staff are maintained at all times;
  • Ensures that effective conflict resolution practices are maintained according to established processes and procedures to support a cohesive multidisciplinary team
  • Provides clear guidance in resolving ethical dilemmas through established policies and procedures of the institution;
  • Compiles clinical data, analyses findings and makes recommendations as necessary for improving clinical practice;
  • Ensures that professional practice issues are reported to the Senior Nursing Manager or other authorized officer;
  • Facilitates the development and review of Policies and Procedures and Nursing Care Protocols, within the area of responsibility;
  • Upholds and promotes Infection Control Policies and Procedures in accordance with Hospital guidelines.
  • Investigates and acts upon patient accidents and incidents within the area of responsibility according to approved processes and procedures;
  • Ensures the effective orientation of new nursing personnel to the assigned department in accordance with established processes and procedures.
  • Ensures adherence to all emergency response processes at all times;
  • Identifies educational needs and opportunities for the development of nursing staff under his or her supervision;
  • Ensures that all administration and documentation requirements are initiated and completed in a professional and timely manner, through the use of established organizational processes;
  • Performs any other job related activities as may be assigned from time to time.

C.    Academic qualifications and experience required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or related field plus one [1] year at Grade 12; OR
  • Bachelors Degree plus four [4] years at Grade 10 and above; OR
  • Associate Degree/Diploma in Nursing from a recognized institution plus three [3] years at Grade 12.

D.    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Advanced knowledge and application of nursing practices;
  • Working knowledge of, and ability to interpret and apply Hospital rules and regulations, departmental guidelines and standard operating procedures. 
  • Intermediate level leadership and supervisory skills, coaching and team building skills and an intermediate level of emotional intelligence.
  • Advanced planning, organizational and time management skills, in particular, ability to prioritize workload;
  • Intermediate level computer literacy skills; ability to manipulate software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases and presentation programs.
  • Intermediate level skills in handling complaints in an objective, fair, and unbiased manner.
  • Intermediate level oral and written communication skills and expert listening skills.
  • Ability to plan and control resources/inventory of the unit/department;
  • Ability to diagnose complex issues and situations to formulate opinions, provide logical recommendations and solutions.
  • Intermediate level problem-solving, conflict management, and decision-making skills, and ability to manage time in a fast-paced environment, meet deadlines and remain calm under intense pressure.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and linkages with associates and internal and external clients and stakeholders.
  • Ability to engage and deploy human resources assigned to the unit/department through effective rostering, to ensure acceptable staff productivity and efficiency levels;
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and application of relevant nursing skills including knowledge and understanding of appropriate equipment, legislation, policies and procedures;
  • Ability to demonstrate safety protocols with regard to unexpected client responses, confrontation, personal threat or other crisis situations;
  • Working knowledge of fire and evacuation and other emergency management policies and procedures;
  • Ability to exercise initiative, tact and good judgement particularly as it relates to safeguarding of confidential information;
  • Advanced ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of internal and external clients
  • Ability to uphold high levels of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Ability to apply general administrative principles.

E.     SALARY

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
