Millennium Heights Medical Complex conducts medical internships following Caribbean Association of Medical Councils standards. Medical internship is available to students who have successfully completed medical school where the internship is recorded as the intern’s final step of basic medical training. This is typically a one-year period and comprises four, three-month rotations in the core disciplines:
- General Medicine
- General Surgery
- Paediatrics
- Obstetrics & Gynaecology
Each intern is required to do a one-week rotation in the Accident & Emergency Department.
Interns are required to obtain a conditional registration with the St. Lucia Medical and Dental Council which allows for supervised practice with a recognised and accredited institution. Full registration is granted after satisfactory completion of the internship.
An internship provides the new doctor with opportunities to develop a range of general professional skills and attitudes necessary for the practice of medicine.
The general clinical training offered through our internship program will enable interns to:
- Develop knowledge and understanding of disease processes
- Improve skills in history taking, clinical examination, and diagnosis, and learn to exercise them within the time constraints of practice
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with patients, relatives, doctors, and other healthcare workers
- Appropriately investigate patients’ problems, and plan and carry out treatment
- Use laboratory and other diagnostic services effectively
- Perform simple clinical procedures
- Adopt safe practices in relation to radiation protection and handling of blood products, body fluids, and tissues with due regard for the safety of patients and others
- Be aware of and use opportunities for disease prevention and health promotion
- Develop and maintain appropriate clinical attitudes. These include respect for the dignity of the patient and concern for the relatives, an awareness of legal and ethical issues, and of the importance of professional confidentiality
- Be aware of limitations and be ready to seek help
- Learn the importance of teamwork
- Continue self-education
All intern posts are full-time. Interns are restricted to working within their intern posts and are expected to work 40 hours per week as prescribed by the Chief Medical Officer.
Each intern is required to participate in the on-call system for patient care no more than one in three call rotas. When on call, interns are required to remain on the compound for the duration of the call.
Annual leave allowance is 14 working. If you are unfit for work, you are required to adhere to the reporting procedures for sickness absence.
