The Special Care Baby Unit or SCBU aims to deliver optimized nursing care to sick, small, and well newborn infants as well as a nurturing environment for physical and developmental well-being of the infants and their families. This care includes providing support and guidance to parents. SCBU provides evidence-based care that is consistent with the concepts of family-centered developmentally supportive care.

For babies requiring specialist support SCBU offers services in respiratory support (oxygen therapy, ventilator support), tube feeding, phototherapy for jaundice among other treatments and conditions. Some babies may not require monitoring but may need assistance for weight gain and feeding in preparation for going home.

Here are some main reasons for admission or transfer to SCBU:

• Intensive care or high dependency care
  • Assistance with feeding
  • Monitoring of blood glucose
  • Phototherapy
  • Surgical care

If your baby is transferred or admitted to SCBU, these are a few things we will need from you:

• Be available daily for updates from doctors about your baby. You will be provided with a phone number on admission for days you are unable to come in. You may call for updates, however, doctors will not share full details of your baby’s treatment over the phone.
  • Allow doctors to conduct their rounds and wait in the area provided until they are done.
  • Sometimes, if medications are not available at Millennium Heights Medical Complex, you may be required to purchase a privately owned pharmacy for your baby’s treatment.Practice the basic care techniques that will be taught to you by our nurses. Your participation is important for the baby’s well-being

  • You only need to provide diapers and wipes for the baby. Everything else, including clothes, will be provided on the unit.
