The Millennium Heights Medical Complex has marked a significant milestone in enhancing healthcare services with the official commissioning of the Secondary Care Hospital, heralded as a digital healthcare facility. Formerly known as Victoria Hospital, the newly inaugurated institution aims to alleviate the burden on the existing OKEU Hospital while providing exceptional care to a diverse range of patients. Dr. Dexter James, CEO of the Millennium Heights Medical Complex, emphasized the institution’s commitment to embracing cutting-edge technology in healthcare.

The Secondary Care Hospital is poised to leverage telemet services, teleradiology, and tele laboratory, reflecting a forward-looking approach to healthcare delivery. Dr. James clarified that being a Secondary Hospital does not signify subpar care but rather represents a different category of medical services tailored to individuals with varying healthcare needs. Strategically designed to complement services at the OKEU Hospital, the facility offers additional beds to enhance patient capacity and streamline the flow of cases at the Accident Emergency Department. Specialized services provided include long-term rehabilitative care for patients recovering from strokes and orthopedic injuries, as well as end-of-life palliative care.

According to Dr. James, this diversified approach is a crucial step towards providing universal health coverage in Saint Lucia. Minister for Health Moses Jn Baptiste highlighted the positive impact the new facility will have on both patients and staff at the OKEU Hospital. The introduction of the Secondary Care Hospital is expected to alleviate the strain on resources, enabling more efficient healthcare delivery across the region. Notably, the integration of technology into patient services allows for convenient options such as ordering food and making requests through the use of tablets, enhancing the overall healthcare experience.

The official launch of the Secondary Care Hospital occurred on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, marking a pivotal moment in Saint Lucia’s healthcare landscape.
